Cantamath 2012

We have had great success here at Westburn with Cantamath this year. All students from years 6-8 were required to make a Math project, such as Written Work, a Mathematical Poster or a Mathematical Model. The teachers then judged these projects and decided which ones would be sent to the CBS Arena, to be on display with student's projects from all around Canterbury.

43 awards were given to projects created by Westburn students. These were a mix of Highly Commended and Excellences, and one extremely hard working student was awarded a very prestigious prize indeed. This was Helena, and her "Epcot Ball". Helena received an "Outstanding Award", which is only awarded to one person in each year group. This is an amazing achievement. Well done, Helena!

Westburn also did exceedingly well in the Cantamath Team problem solving competition. The year 7 team, Gabe, Jem, Akshat and Kate B placed 6th, with an awesome score of 95/100 questions. Well done, guys!
The year 8 team placed 5th, with a remarkable score of 100/100, with 3 minutes of the competition left. The year 8s involved were Chloe K, Yoon Su, Justine L and Olivia. What an awesome achievement!

Stars in their Eyes? Movie

This video was created on iMovie as a task while Year 7's were on Ski Trip. It is a spoof on various movies, and don't take offense if you are a Justin Bieber fan!

Hope you enjoy!

English- A crazy Language!

Does the head of a flower have any hair?
Does the eye of a needle ever stand and stare?
If the plural of mouse, is mice,
Then shouldn’t the plural of house be hice?

To see more than one goose, you would see geese.
So shouldn’t the plural of moose be meese?
Can you cross the bridge of a nose?
And does the foot of a bed have any toes?

A tooth is one and a whole set are teeth.
So why isn’t the plural of booth, beeth?
And if teachers “taught”…
Then shouldn’t preachers “praught”?!?!

Since writers write, and singers sing,
Then shouldn’t hammers ham, and fingers fing?
And since a father can also be known as “Pop”,Imagine if a mother was also known as “Mop”!!

A man is one, and a whole crowd are men,
Then why don’t we call more than one pan, pen?
If people from Poland are called Polish,
Then why aren’t people from Holland , Hollish?
And if we say ring, rang and rung…
Then shouldn’t we say bring, brang and brung?
Since the male pronouns are he, his and him…
Then shouldn’t the female be she, shis and shim?

English is a very weird language, I mean come on!
It’s a language where alarms go off by going on!!
Isn’t it funny that boxing rings are in fact square?
I challenge you to master the English language- if you dare!!

Science Night

On the third Monday of the second term, Westburn school is having a science night. From 7-9pm the competition is open to all year 7-8 students, who have to bring a adult along with them.
Mrs. Glasson is running it, but she has not told us what we’re doing. However, she has given us one clue. We will test out our creation by having a race off, and after that we can make final changes to our project; we will then have a final race. The winners will then be announced and they will have the glory of being the grand winners!

Garden Club

The Garden Club is a group of children from Year 1 to 8. It is taken by Mrs Houlston, who comes in every lunch time. The Garden Club trims bushes, plants flowers and takes care of plants around school. They also are growing a vegetable patch. This includes tomatoes, beans and a range of herbs including chives, parsley, thyme, and many more. Once a week the Garden Club comes together to look after the plants and flowers. The Garden Club plants flowers like sunflowers, and replaces dead, old plants with live ones.

The Year 8 camp is fast approaching! On Monday, the Year 8s will travel to Wainui Heights and do many different activities for the four days they are staying there for. The bunk rooms and activity groups have been decided and everyone is very excited!

Some activities include coast steering, archery, canoeing and a bonfire night. Most of us have started packing the many many MANY different equipment and clothing (we're not leaving our cuddly toys behind!) we need on the days.

Dodge Ball

The School Council came up with the idea of weekly sport games at lunchtime every Friday. There are two teams, one team consisting of some students from the School Council, and the other team consisting of students from Year 5-8 that has signed up to participate.

Today, at lunch, there is going to be a game of dodge ball, and we have successfully acquired 16 members for each team. Thanks to the event organizers from the School Council who have set this up!

Book Fair

For the whole of this week, there has been a book fair in the library. It is a fundraiser for the school. It sells books and stationery. The items are provided by Scholastic.

The library has been very busy in the past days. We went and asked Mrs Junovich, the librarian, some questions.

Q.How much money did the fair raise?
A.The total is undetermined but it has raised at least a thousand dollars.

Q.Is this the first year of the Book Fair? Is it going to be continued in the years to come?
A.This is the first fair in at least five years. Not next year. It is good to give rest to parents from spending money but it was a very good way for raising money for the school
